Accounting Manager

As California’s leading college success nonprofit, 10,000 Degrees supports students from low-income backgrounds to and through college. We provide comprehensive personal support, scholarships, college advising, and financial aid management for our students. With this support, over 80% of our four-year college students earn bachelor’s degrees, compared to 31% of their peers nationally. Our students that start at community college transfer to and graduate from four-year colleges at a rate that’s three times the national average.

Through our programs, we reached more than 10,000 students and their families in the past year, including direct support to over 2,200 college students. We currently work in 27 high schools, 34 community colleges and over 50 four-year colleges and universities across the nation.

Position Summary:

The Accounting Manager is responsible for maintaining accurate and timely accounting data, which assures compliance with audit requirements and provides adequate basis for management decision‐making. In partnership with an external accounting firm, perform the monthly/annual close.

The Accounting Manager reports to the Director of Finance and Operations and is responsible for supervising a staff accountant and accounts receivable/payroll associate.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and review financial data to ensure it provides a fair and accurate presentation of the financial position of 10,000 Degrees, complies with GAAP and provides information for management decisions around cash management, expense and revenue decisions and growth strategies
  • Maintain financial reporting systems including:
    • Fund accounting general ledger
    • Accounts Payable ledger
    • Accounts Receivable ledger
    • Scholarship awards
    • Cash receipts and cash management
    • Revenue recognition and reconciliation
  • Coordinate annual audit
  • Grants analysis and reporting
  • Review and maintain adequate insurance coverage
  • Track fixed assets and depreciation
  • Assure adequate records retention
  • Assist in the annual budget
  • Monthly tracking of budget vs. actual
  • Active participation in monthly Finance Committee report preparation and review

Success Factors:

The successful candidate will have had experience in accounting roles and can demonstrate commitment to accuracy and clarity. He/she will contribute to a growing organization by assisting in the design and implementation of procedures and processes and in supporting other staff members. A self‐starter who can deliver projects on target while managing the routine accounting tasks would be an ideal candidate.


  • BA degree required
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent problem solving and conflict management skills and abilities
  • Excellent time and project management skills and abilities
  • Experience in accounting systems, including FundEZ
  • Experience with Salesforce
  • Strong MS Office experience
  • Experience in nonprofits highly desirable
