Director of Communications & Marketing

10,000 Degrees is a leading college success nonprofit organization in California that helps low-income and first generation students get to and through college. Founded in 1981, the organization provides a comprehensive wrap-around program that includes college prep, mentoring, college and financial counseling, scholarships and financial aid management. 10,000 Degrees has helped thousands of students get to and successfully graduate college. The Director of Communications and Marketing is a critical position to help us continue our growth momentum and help build visibility and opportunity in multiple markets.

Position Profile:

The Director of Communications and Marketing reports directly to the President & CEO and is a key leader in the organization tasked with executing strategic goals and designing and implementing a communications and marketing plan consistent with brand guidelines and framework.

This position is responsible for increasing brand awareness, visibility and positioning at the local, state and national levels. This position must be able to operate at a tactical, strategic and operational level, handling the communication needs of multiple departments including, development, program and external relations including timelines, budget and vendor management. Major audiences include donors, prospective donors, institutional partners and key influencers throughout the San Francisco Bay area.

This position currently supervises one FTE position, coordinates closely with the Chief of Staff and manages external vendors in support of marketing and communications efforts. The Director of Marketing and Communications works in conjunction with all staff to promote 10,000 Degrees and its work—expanding its growing reach and reputation as the go-to source for college success.

Positioning and Branding

  • Proactively advise the Executive Team and develop a plan to build awareness, credibility and support for 10,000 Degrees in the communities we serve.
  • Oversee and develop external content, including a portfolio of integrated marketing materials, annual impact reports, newsletters, quarterly updates, press releases, digital and social media web and blog content, and brand messaging.
  • Work closely with the VP of External Relations to develop a comprehensive strategy for organizational positioning and thought leadership, including developing and sourcing opportunities for speaking engagements and speaking roles at conferences for 10,000 Degrees leadership.
  • Coordinate crisis management communications as necessary.

Content creation, writing and editing

  • Create content for and maintain a portfolio of integrated marketing materials, including annual reports, case statements, brochures, fact sheets and other reference material, ensuring outputs are up-to-date and in-line with key messaging, branding and style guides
  • Execute marketing and communication campaigns to support 10,000 Degrees programs and strategic initiatives, fundraising activities, and appeals and events and digital and social media campaigns, newsletter content, blog posts and press materials
  • Create/curate/re-purpose high-quality content to attract, inform, and engage audiences across multiple platforms
  • Craft and edit speeches, thought leadership pieces and talking points for CEO, event speakers, alumni and students

building visibility

  • Develop and execute global and regional brand development and marketing plans to expand awareness and visibility
  • Seek out and help define new creative possibilities for brand storytelling, content, social media programs, videos, traditional and nontraditional media, including awards and recognition.
  • Work closely with Regional Advisory Boards to ensure that they are tooled with the materials and coaching needed to be effective brand ambassadors, and leverage their networks to develop regional visibility efforts.


  • Work closely with the Chief Development Officer and Program Directors to ensure all communications and collateral material are aligned with brand messaging.
  • Execute all communications and marketing strategies related to events.

Press Relations and Media

  • Develop and execute plan to grow press coverage (local and national) across various earned media channels (e.g. print, broadcast, internet)
  • Manage the story pitching and placement process, including writing pitches and engaging the necessary stakeholders.
  • Identify and generates well-timed opportunities for earned media across our programs

Internal Communications

  • Work closely with the Chief of Staff to ensure the creation and distribution of news of our progress and achievements to all internal stakeholders and execution of our new internal communications protocol.
  • Train all internal stakeholders on brand messaging and storytelling.
  • Provide communications coaching to all staff and brand ambassadors, including Board and Advisory Boards through the development and delivery of collateral, storytelling, keynote speeches for events, and trainings and educational materials that help staff deliver at conferences or other meetings.

Metrics and measurement

  • Determine and track what messaging and materials are the most effective for the different audiences.
  • Work closely with the Data and Evaluation team and maintain careful and constant records of our successes and impacts to add to our metrics system, ensuring all materials reflect updated metrics and messaging.
  • Track market forces, trends and competition.

education and experience:

  • 6+ years of deep work experience and expertise in the communications and/or media world preferably in a non-profit environment.
  • Demonstrated, successful track-record working with the media.
  • Minimum undergraduate degree.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign)
