Director, Evaluation and Learning

Position Summary

The Director, Evaluation and Learning, will provide leadership and day-to-day management for all performance management and evaluation activities for 10,000 Degrees programs and our continuing evolution toward a data driven culture. The Director will oversee the design and maintenance of program performance management systems, all data collection, and all internal evaluation efforts.

The successful candidate will bring previous experience with data systems and strong analytical skills to the role, and will be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. S/he will be intellectually curious, yet grounded in his/her awareness of others’ perspectives and sensitive to the challenges that 10,000 Degrees students and direct-service staff experience.   • Develop, manage and refine data collection, analyses and reporting tools and instruments for use across programs and the organization, including for direct service staff, management and executive teams and for the Board of Directors.
  • Design or modify specific data collection instruments for programs such as applications, pre/post-tests, surveys, assessments, interview guides, and focus group protocols.
  • Analyze collected output, attendance/dosage, and outcome data and prepare reports for internal use and external distribution summarizing analyzed results.
  • Act as liaison between 10,000 Degrees and all external evaluation projects and organizations.
  • Work closely with the Development and Communications teams to provide outcome information for proposal writing and author text for evaluation plans and logic models.
  • Ensure timely monitoring and reporting of program impacts and metrics, and ensure that changes in program conditions are taken into consideration in planning, assessing impact and reporting on progress.
  • Participates in program design and planning and strategic planning process.
  • Develop and steward data sharing agreements with schools and partners.

Learning and Capacity Building:

  • Coordinate effective dissemination of findings, conclusions, recommendations and lessons learned from evaluations, with a view to improving the program design and strategy and contributing to wider learning.
  • Contribute to organizational learning through the design of procedures, processes, and systems to encourage and facilitate more effective sharing of program results, approaches, and lessons learned throughout the organization.
  • Promote a culture of reflection, learning, and data-based decision making among 10,000 Degrees staff.
  • Oversee building core competencies of staff through training and technical assistance.


  • Collaborate with Systems Admin team to review and alter our current data and reporting system as needed, and make recommendations for data collection strategy and tools.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to provide outcome and impact data.
  • Participate in special projects and perform additional tasks assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, public administration, public affairs, sociology, history, social work or related field that includes background on research and evaluation, outcome measurement, or statistics. Master’s degree preferred;
  • A minimum of three to five years’ experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods, tool design and validation;
  • Knowledge of Salesforce is a plus and extensive experience with that or a similar CRM system is critical.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with a strong focus on metrics and data-driven decision making, preferably in a not for profit organization;
  • Track record in managing or overseeing research, evaluation, or performance management projects. This should include experience supervising staff and managing workflow;
  • Experience in design and modification of program logic models / theory of change models or similar planning documentation;
  • Excellent organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills;
  • Proficient with spreadsheets, including use of Microsoft Excel. Ability to work with databases, and experience with statistical analysis packages;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a collaborative approach and willingness to work as part of a cohesive team;
  • Excellent analytical ability, written and verbal communication skills; ability to summarize complex issues clearly and concisely;
  • Ability to design, modify, and administer written assessment instruments (pre/post tests and surveys);
  • Ability to provide ongoing staff training on data collection methods, evaluation concepts;
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of individuals and organizations;
