Director of People and Culture

Founded in 1981, 10,000 Degrees is a leading college success nonprofit organization in California with a mission to support students from low-income backgrounds get to and through college in order to positively impact their communities and the world. 10,000 Degrees envisions a world in which all children have equitable opportunities to realize their potential regardless of race, ethnicity or socioeconomic background. Through an innovative Fellowship program of alumni who are recent college graduates, 10,000 Degrees provides a comprehensive wrap-around program that includes college prep, mentoring, college and financial counseling and navigation, scholarships and financial aid management.

10,000 Degrees has helped thousands of students get to and successfully graduate college. Over 80% of 10,000 Degrees students starting at 4-year college graduate, far exceeding national averages, and our students starting at community college transfer and graduate with their baccalaureate at three times the national average. In addition, our students are graduating with 85% less loan debt than the average college graduate. 10,000 Degrees is a top-rated organization that has received numerous awards and recognition for effectiveness and efficiency, including the top rating from Charity Navigator consistently for many years.

10,000 Degrees currently operates in 7 Bay Area Counties, reaching more than 12,000 students and families annually, and is supporting 2,200 students in colleges across the country (60% start at the 4-year, 40% start at community college). Last year, we distributed $4 million in our own scholarships and leveraged an additional $22.5 million in free financial aid.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for a Director of People and Culture to be part of a growing organization and a dynamic team that is dedicated to creating educational equity.

This leader will evaluate and advise on the organization’s policies and systems concerning human capital and will have a proven ability to foster and strengthen cultures rooted in collaboration, compassion and professionalism.

This position will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer, and will help inform, lead and guide the organization in designing and implementing a comprehensive talent development plan with specific strategies geared towards:

  1. attracting, developing and retaining top talent,
  2. developing a culture of feedback and learning, and
  3. enhancing practices for a more inclusive and equitable workplace.

Talent development will have a target focus on developing 10,000 Degrees leadership pipeline beginning with recruiting alumni and recent college graduates with similar lived experiences to our students and developing their professional skills to grow into future fellows, managers and directors.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

This position will partner with the CEO, Executive Team and Director of Human Resources and Payroll to drive accountability around employee support, hiring, training, and access by focusing on positioning HR within an equity imperative and building and sustaining a culture of inclusion.

The key responsibilities of this position are:

Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Ensure and develop a thoughtful talent acquisition strategy; develop and implement strategies that will identify and further the hiring, retention and development of diverse talent.
  • Partner with the Director of Human Resources and Payroll and hiring managers to ensure the most effective recruitment and outreach strategies for talent sourcing.
  • Develop and oversee the new staff orientation and introductory training program.

Professional Development/Performance Management

  • Implement an employee development program to support long term development for all staff across the organization, creating a robust structure to support staff engagement and professional development that recognizes and supports diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Human Resources and Payroll to ensure an annual calendar of professional development trainings; provide content-specific training.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive professional development and training program for 10KD’s internal leadership pipeline of Fellows, Managers and Directors.
  • Work closely with leadership to develop and implement a 360 degree feedback process.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching for Managers and Directors especially as it relates to developing supervisory skills and managing teams.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and facilitation for staff; enthusiastically support the organization’s staff in developing awareness, comfort and confidence to address and champion equity in all aspects of the organization.

Culture/Employee Relations

  • Serve as a thought partner and content expert on equitable and inclusive HR practices;
  • Provide leadership and partnership with management and employees to develop, communicate and advise on policies, procedures and norms that will enhance employee relations and shape organizational culture.
  • Support the development of transparent communication systems across teams, departments, and staff to identify opportunities for impact and trust building;
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with others to develop an integrated strategy and associated plan, embedding recommendations from cultural assessment into systems and processes;
  • Exhibit understanding, sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences present in the organization’s service and employee population; oversee the creation and implementation of programs that build momentum and foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace.
  • Work closely with teams throughout the organization to ensure fun and engaging employee events and appreciation activities.


  • Masters degree required in a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in the nonprofit sector managing Human Resources, organizational development and staff training with an equity focus.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing effective organizational communication processes and building inclusive workplace cultures.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Impeccable judgement and decision-making processes.
  • Works well in teams and independently; is a self-starter, problem solver and positive leader.
