Human Resources Generalist


As California’s leading college success nonprofit, 10,000 Degrees supports students from low-income backgrounds to and through college. We provide comprehensive personal support, scholarships, college advising, and financial aid management for our students. With this support, over 80% of our four-year college students earn bachelor’s degrees, compared to 31% of their peers nationally. Our students that start at community college transfer to and graduate from four-year colleges at a rate that’s three times the national average.

Through our programs, we reached more than 10,000 students and their families in the past year, including direct support to over 2,200 college students. We currently work in 27 high schools, 34 community colleges and over 50 four-year colleges and universities across the nation.

Position Summary:

The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for performing a variety of HR duties including but not limited to the following functional areas: benefits administration, compensation, employee relations, onboarding/offboarding, performance management, policy implementation, recruitment/employment, risk management/compliance, training/development and employment law.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the development and implementation of personnel policies and procedures; prepares and maintains the employee handbook and the policies and procedures manual.
  • Administers the compensation and benefit programs, including processing benefit bills, providing proper documentation to payroll, drafting compensation letters and processing pay changes.
  • Develops and monitors the performance evaluation program; administers annually, working closely with department managers to ensure successful completion.
  • Maintains data such as that required for the annual EEO-1 report.
  • Conducts recruitment and hiring for all personnel; conducts new employee on-boarding and orientation.
  • Manages employee relations counseling and exit interviewing.
  • Creates and maintains organizational charts and ensures payroll system is updated accordingly.
  • Creates and maintains job descriptions for all positions.
  • Maintains all employee information, records, personnel files, etc. in compliance with state and federal laws.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Provides training, training resources, and manages employee attendance at off-site training and development.

Qualifications:

  • BA degree required
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible generalist experience
  • SHRM certified preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent problem solving and conflict management skills and abilities
  • Excellent time and project management skills and abilities
  • Strong MS Office experience
  • HRIS or data management experience
  • Experience recruiting and hiring a diverse workforce
  • Experience in nonprofits highly desirable
