Payroll & Benefits Manager

The Opportunity

The Payroll & Benefits Manager is an integral member of the Finance and Operations team and is responsible for processing timecards, semi-monthly payrolls for 100+ full-time and part-time employees, benefits administration, related onboarding/offboarding, policy implementation, regulatory compliance, training and development.


  • Perform payroll functions including setting up and training new employees, tracking and processing employee time cards, pay-rate changes, deductions, garnishments, taxes, 401K and benefits contributions and terminations.
  • Meet deadlines for payroll processing to ensure employees are paid accurately and timely.
  • Ensure compliance, maintain policies and procedures and stay informed with state, local and federal employment regulations. Coordinate with Human Resources and other departments to provide up-to-date information to employees via the Employee Handbook. Communicate with management any updates or changes in laws or best practices.
  • Administer benefit programs, including onboarding new employees, processing benefit bills, providing proper documentation to payroll, and processing pay changes. Work with our health insurance broker to maintain accurate records.
  • Perform reconciliations of employee PTO balances and rates.
  • Maintain data/records as required for government and other regulatory agencies as well as internal reporting. Prepare schedules of payroll and benefits expenditures to facilitate analysis as needed.
  • Provide records, documentation and analytical schedules for internal and external audits.
  • Create payroll journal entries for General Ledger entry.
  • Develop expertise with payroll processing system requirements to maintain accurate employee records.


  • Commitment to 10,000 Degrees’ mission, values, and goals
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressively responsible Payroll & Benefits administration
  • Timecard and payroll processing experience required. Practical experience and proficiency with Paycom system is preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational, problem solving and data analysis skills
  • Strong MS Office and Google Suite experience
  • History of working effectively as part of a team
  • Experience in nonprofits highly desirable


This position will be a hybrid role (combination of virtual and in-person) based in our San Rafael office
