The Opportunity
The Staff Accountant – Scholarship Liaison is an integral part of the 10,000 Degrees mission to support students from low-income backgrounds to and through college to positively impact their communities and the world. At 10,000 Degrees we believe that education is the foundation of a just and equitable society. Students and their families as well as schools and local leaders each play a critical role in educating the next generation and strengthening the economic vitality and social health of our communities. The students we serve are 100% from low-income communities; 89% black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian Pacific Islander, and People of color; and 85% first generation students. 10,000 Degrees currently distributes $6M in scholarships to 3,000 students annually. This is expected to grow to over $7M in scholarships awarded to more than 5,000 students annually by 2026.
The Staff Accountant will be a critical part of the Finance Team, working closely with the Scholarship Team and other departments as needed, to ensure that our students receive their scholarship funds timely and in full, and that funding for all awarded scholarship is available.
The Staff Accountant will also cover other duties within the Finance Department and participate in projects as needed.
Over time, it is anticipated that the role will grow to support the Scholarship Team on a full-time basis.
Responsibilities
- Liaison to scholarship team (~50% of time commitment currently)
- Accrue funds for awarded scholarships
- Manage fund balances for scholarships (revenue & expense)
- Track scholarship modifications
- Prepare appropriate journal entries
- Create reports
- Reconcile scholarships between departments & systems
- Prepare check runs
- Assist students and scholarship team as needed
- Manage scholarship administrative fees
- Project: Assess options to distribute scholarship funds electronically and implement solution
- Bank Reconciliations for Month-end close
- Credit Card Reconciliations for Month-end close
- Assist in annual audit as related to position
- Collaborate within Finance and across Departments on projects as needed
Qualifications
- Commitment to 10,000 Degrees’ mission, values, and goals
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or equivalent experience
- At least 2 years relevant experience
- Strong analytical skills
- High level of professionalism
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong administrative and organizational skills, ability to multi-task
- Proficient with variety of software applications (MSOffice, Google, accounting software, Salesforce)
- Demonstrate enthusiasm and initiative and the ability to work independently
- History of working effectively as part of a team
Location:
This position will be remote. Attendance at 10,000 Degrees events is encouraged.

Compensation Package:
- The starting salary for this position is $70,000 annually, 37.5 hours per week
- This is a full-time, exempt position
