Monthly Memo, April 2018

A quick recap of the ongoing work by our amazing students and staff from the previous month.

College Student Renewal Rates Climb

10,000 Degrees college students here in the North Bay and across the country exceeded 2017-18 renewal rates for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the California Dream Act, and the 10,000 Degrees Undergraduate Scholarship. Most notably, 10,000 Degrees students at Santa Rosa Junior College increased their renewal rate from 76% to 83%. That’s SRJC Strong!

100+ Students Attend Busy Career Night

Thursday, March 29, at 10,000 Degrees headquarters in San Rafael, more than 100 students and more than 40 organizations highlighted dozens of rewarding career opportunities. Participants included Airbnb, Autodesk, BioMarin Pharmaceutical, Loomis Sayles, Pandora, San Rafael Fire Department, and Yelp.

Collaborating to Help Marin City Students

Throughout the month of March, 10,000 Degrees College Access Manager, Rondell Gibson, collaborated with Bridge the Gap staff on a pilot program for boys at Bayside Martin Luther King Jr. Academy. The program will incorporate academic support, enrichment, mentoring, and internships.

Hiring for Summer Programs Heats Up!

The call for extra staffing at this year’s college immersion experience, the 10,000 Degrees Summer Intensive, was heard loud and clear by our students! With only 7 spots to fill, we received more than 30 applications – it’s clear our hard-working students love to give back. At the same time, applications for 10,000 Degrees Student Ambassador positions at partnering colleges hit double digits.

Successful “Senior Hangout” in San Francisco

10,000 Degrees College Success Fellow in San Francisco, Ana Anguiano hosted another successful “Senior Hangout” at Balboa High School. Attending 10,000 Degrees students shared their aspirations, dreams, and concerns about their futures. Students participated in trust-building activities and worked on the many steps needed to pursue college matriculation.
