Graduate Student Scholarships
Scholarships for Graduate Students
10,000 Degrees offers scholarships for graduate students pursuing Master’s Degrees in law, medicine, nursing, journalism, pursuing a teaching credential, and more. Eligibility requirements vary. We award scholarships primarily to students from low-income backgrounds in the regions we serve in the Bay Area, California and Utah.
Law School Scholarship
The Marin County Bar Association Legal Education Scholarship, administered by 10,000 Degrees, provides a one-time award of up to $5,000 for law school students. The scholarship was established in 2011 by members of the Marin County Bar Association (MCBA) to support student scholarships for law school and inspire future leaders in the legal community who have an interest in giving back to their local community.
Eligibility requirements:
- Enrolled full-time in an accredited law school geographically located in California; AND be a graduate of a Marin County high school OR have continuously lived in Marin County for no less than a 3-year period immediately prior to submission of the scholarship application;
- Demonstrated financial need;
- Exhibit other relevant factors including academic achievement, community service and involvement, career goals and special circumstances as demonstrated in the completed scholarship application.
Health Careers Scholarship of Sonoma County
The Sonoma County Medical Association & Alliance Health Careers Scholarship Fund, administered by 10,000 Degrees, was established in 2001 to support students pursuing a career in medicine, nursing, or other allied health fields. This scholarship is open to undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree students.
Eligibility requirements:
- Must be Sonoma County resident or have graduated from a Sonoma County high school;
- Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement with a 3.0 GPA or higher;
- Studying Medicine, Nursing, or an allied health field including Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, or Radiology Tech;
- Must submit two current letters of recommendation from instructors or professional associates (excluding relatives).
Teaching Credential Scholarship
10,000 Degrees administers two scholarships for students pursuing a teaching credential:
The Marin Retired Teachers Association Scholarship was established by Marin County retired teachers to assist Marin County High School graduates pursuing Fifth-Year Teaching Credentials (or Master’s degrees in Education).
Eligibility requirements:
- Must be graduates of a Marin County high school;
- Actively pursuing Fifth-Year Teaching Credentials (or Master’s degrees in Education);
- Must maintain a minimum college GPA of 2.0.
The Building Better Teachers Scholarship supports early care and education (ECE) teachers continuing their college coursework in early development and education to earn a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
Eligibility requirements:
- Students must have lived in the Bay Area for at least one year;
- Students must be enrolled in an ECE degree program intending to pursue a career with children ages zero to five (pre-kindergarten);
- Students may be taking community college courses related to early childhood education with plans to transfer to a four-year college;
- Students must maintain a minimum college GPA of 2.0;
- Students from low- to moderate-income backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Journalism Scholarship
The Richard T. Torkelson Memorial Scholarship Fund for Journalism, administered by 10,000 Degrees, was established in 1991 in memory of Richard T. Torkelson, a Press Democrat reporter. This scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students studying journalism, communications, photojournalism, documentary art, and non-fiction digital media.
Eligibility requirements:
- Must reside in Sonoma, Lake, or Mendocino county;
- Students must submit two samples of their best work for print or broadcast;
- Must submit two letters of recommendation from instructors or close professional associates (excluding friends and relatives).
